The Messy Family took a trip to Waynesville Ohio Saturday, October 13th to visit The Ohio Renaissance Festival. It was just over an hour drive for us and it was well worth it. I was so much more excited than Mr. Messy. He just didn’t see the appeal of taking the girls there. I guess he had no clue what it was all about.
The Ohio Renaissance Festival is a permanent village set on 30 acres in Waynesville Ohio. Every year starting Labor Day weekend and for 8 weekends total it’s open. I was lucky enough to attend this awesome event when I was a teenager and have wanted to go back ever since. For some reason though it took more than 15 years for me to return. The Festival is filled with people dressed as if they were in the Renaissance times. They are not to break character and I noticed several visitors dressed up also.
The girls were totally excited to be going to a real kingdom with a real King, Queen and of course Princess. The first thing that happened when we arrived was Diva and I ran, and I mean we booked it, to the bathrooms. Which were my least favorite part of the Festival, so much so that I avoided it for the rest of the day. I can imagine though that the port-o-potties that they provided were much better than the bathrooms in the medieval times.
The village is basically made up of shops, food stops, rides and games. They do have stages with shows also. Almost everything cost money, so if you plan on attending make sure you bring plenty of money for admission and for a full day of fun and shopping. I can’t see how anyone could make it through the Festival without buying a souvenir or 2. The food prices were equivalent of what you might spend at any festival or amusement park.
We brought the stroller with us for FB. Although, I ended up carrying her the entire time while Drama or Diva sat in the stroller. I figured we had it with us, someone might as well get some use out of it. The stroller wasn’t a problem at all. With plenty of room to walk around, even with as many people that were there, I didn’t feel as though I would run into the back of anyone or get stuck in a crowd of people.
The show that we watched was pretty entertaining. It had action, a sword fight, and it was funny. The actors were very much in their element and had everyone belly laughing. There were plenty of other shows going on throughout the Festival but this was the only one that we sat down to watch. There is so much to do at The Renaissance Festival and just1 day is not enough time!
My favorite part of the Festival was the rides. With my children at the age they are, I love to watch them laugh and smile, as I’m sure any other parent does. I love the fact that these rides did not operate on electricity but by humans. That’s right, see the pictures below as the swings are being turned by 2 men. The men seemed to very much enjoy their roles and the kids liked them even more. I was a little put off when one of the ride workers tried to charge me for the infant I had in a baby carrier. I decided I wasn’t paying the $3 he wanted to charge me for her since I was getting on the swings only to help Drama and Diva pull the rope to swing. He did turn around and let me get on without paying for her.
Trying to find your car in the field parking lot, with no land marks, was a challenge. We were not the only family walking around hitting the panic button for our car. It took probably an extra 10 minutes to find our car than it would have to just walk to it. I honestly thought at one point in time that there was no way we were going home that night.
Even with a few minor issues I LOVED the Renaissance Festival this time just as much as I did over 15 years ago. I think it’s a great time for people of all ages! There was a wedding that took place while we were there and of course we got to meet royalty! The girls had an absolute blast and keep talking about it non-stop. My husband who did not understand the excitement I had for this trip now wants to make this a yearly outing. I am only about an hour away, so that’s doable for sure. Some of you who may be farther away may see a problem with this. I do think that you should make the trip at least once in order to find out just how awesome it is though! You may be surprised and find yourself planning family vacations to make it here on a yearly basis.

i went last year and had a blast, more people should attend these events. even the kiddos will have fun and learn from them.
I went to the Georgia Renaissance Festival years ago when hubby and I were just married. We had a fabulous time and wanted to go back but then married life kicked in lol. We are still working on going back. It was one of the most fun things I've done. I got to look for stones, watch the joust, sing in the pub. it was awesome!!!
We go every year from Columbus, and it's amazing how it has grown, especially the last five years or so. I'm so glad you guys are going to make it an annual tradition, too! :)
So fun! Great pics! I hate going to the bathrooms at festivals, too. At least you went in the beginning of the day which was probably much better than at the end.
I'm stopping buy from the Irish and Italian Blessings giveaway. This looks like so much fun! I love a good Renaissance Festival!

Looks like you had an awesome day and great pictures! =)
My mom goes to our local Renaissance Fair every year, but I have been able to go. I really wish I could!!!
I really wanted to go to the Medieval one in Kentucky as we didn't have the funds to go to this one this year, we live in Ohio - however I've already warned my hubby that since we are studying the Renaissance next year in our homeschool that we'll have to go. I'm curious though how much magic and fiction versus historical accurateness is there?
I'm so sorry we missed it this year:( My daughter still has one of the flowered crowns from several years ago (which is good, because it wasn't cheap, lol).
So much fun! We have a Renaissance festival near us too! The kids love to dress up!

It looks like you had a ton of fun...personally never been to a Renaissance fest, but maybe I will someday!
What a great adventure. I loved your review. It was so thorough. Aren't they great ways to learn how people lived and survived so long ago. I missed the one in upstate New York but I'm definitely going next year. Thanks for sharing.

This looks like so much fun! I wish we had things like this in our area!
Sooo jealous! We have a HUGE Ren Fest here in Texas and I have been dying to go! Every year there is some medical reason that keeps me from participating, and this year I am too pregnant to be able to walk that much! lol Love all the pics you posted, especially the fire breathing one! Amazing! =)
Looks like tons of fun!! :-)
I've never been to one of these. Looks like fun!
That looks like so much fun! I've never been to a Rennaissance Fair, but I bet my kids would love it!
I've been to a similar festival, and it was really fun, even if it rained. I'll really have to take time to go to another one.
I love the renaissance faires that they have in Florida. I never thought about taking younger children to go, but I think that they would have a blast!
Sounds like a fun time was had by all. I have never been to a Ren. faire.
This looks like so much fun; I've never been to a Renaissance Fest but this has convinced me to go when the next one comes around these parts.
Looks like fun. We used to go to Renaissance Faire when I was a kid too.
I've always wanted to go to this! I live in PA so I'm not too terrible far away. My sister has been there and said she had a great time. I think next year I will def. be going and my daughter will be old enough to walk around as opposed to being carried or strolled.
I have been to one renaissance fair and I loved it. My kids have pics of them dressing up for one and they also had a blast
I think a trip to the " Renaissance Festival" would be awesome from dressing up,riding man operated rides to hunting for my car in the no-landmarked parking lot would be fun. It's something different and I would enjoy the drama & color of it all. Thanks for sharing your experience & joy of it all.
I used to go when I was a kid growing up in ohio...and my baby sister used to actually work the fair as a fortune teller while she went to BGSU...so this brings back fond memories :) Thanks so much for sharing your enjoyment with all of us!
Oh what fun. This reminds me my kids may be coming of an age where they will really like this. I have to get cracking on some costumes. The only thing I don't like about the local faire here is that it is held in the heat of the summer. I like the cooler weather costumes more, oh well.
How fun!
We put up our Christmas tree last night. Way back in 1988 my hubby and I went to a Renaisance festival as newlyweds. We bought a paper quilled snowflake. It was to be our yearly ornament. I had no thought back then that twenty plus years later we'd still have the tradition and that this paper ornament would be a bit mishapen. We enjoy the memory of it every year.
This looks like so much fun my boys would love this. Thanks for the great review and the awesome pictures.
