I have 3 girls and I used disposable diapers with Drama and Diva. However, with FB I saw some sites on these new cloth diapers. So, I started looking into it. These aren't the diapers that your mom used. I still wasn't sold because they aren't cheap and then I have to wash them? Seriously, do you think Messy Mama has time to wash more stuff?
I'm surfing ebay one night when I can't sleep because I have a foot in my rib or I've been to the bathroom 6 times in about 2 hours. I see a cloth diaper with insert, whatever that is, for $1.25 with FREE shipping! Well, I just can't pass up on free shipping. Plus, really $1.25, what could I lose? I start searching for these kind of deals and I've developed a little diaper stash. 6 diapers is a stash right? Now I just have to wait for FB to join me.
FB comes along and I decide I'll wait until I feel better from the birth. A few weeks go by and I am staring at these adorable looking diapers and I think "now's as good a time as any." So, I put the cutsie little thing on my cutsie little thing and OMG!!!! How adorable! Wow, really, it's just so cute. I'm not thinking at all about the actual purpose of the diaper but how fluffy her little bum looks. LOL!
So that's how my addiction begins. The diapers that I first bought were cheap pocket diapers, although they work, I can't trust them overnight for FB. I decided to look at some more expensive diapers. By more expensive, I mean it's going to cost me more than $16.00 for 6 diapers with shipping included. Not only am I messy but I am cheap, meaning I don't like to spend money. I think to myself that I am going all out on this. And why not? They are just as easy to use as disposable diapers. The only thing is that you don't toss it, you wash it. Really, it's that simple. Yes, it does get a little gross sometimes but I'd like you to introduce me to one mom who didn't get a little poop on them at least once or twice.
I have some of my favorite brands but I am willing to try any brand. The only problem I find with cloth diapers is that you don't want to cover them up with clothes. I figure in the long run I'm saving tons of money. Going cloth has inspired me to make other changes in my life; I've hung a clothes line so I'm really only spending money to use my washing machine for them. I think I've read someplace that cloth diapering costs between $200 to $1200 from birth to potty trained. You think that's a lot of money until you find out that using disposables can cost anywhere from $2000 to $3600 from birth to potty trained.
I actually have not decided to continue using cloth for the cost or because they are incredibly adorable. I chose to continue with them because disposable diapers take hundreds of years to break down. This is going to leave my girls with a world full of dirty diapers, all because I don't want to be bothered with washing some poop out of a diaper. No, I won't do that to them. I am sorry that I didn't use cloth on them. So, this opens a whole new can of worms. I am rethinking the way I live. I could go on forever about why I like cloth over disposable, but I think I'll leave that for another post.
Going cloth can be a bit nerve wracking. However, I've found that no matter what the reason a mama choses cloth, she usually feels strongly about it. There is a cloth diapering community out there and most of the mamas are willing to offer help. So, if you are considering using cloth and haven't made up your mind, try reaching out to the mamas that you know or don't know that use cloth. Chances are they will have plenty of support for you.
